New (Different) Project

Posted on 22 May 2020

There is no need for me to discuss current global affairs, but given these circumstances, I’ve decided to delay the completion of Messiah Quest II. After all the work I’ve put into the game, I would like to sell it and validate its value. However, I do not feel it would be a good time to sell anything yet. So I have been working on something I will put out for free.

I’ve started another project in Unity different from the one before. This new concept is even less complicated than the last. The previous project was going to be a first-person shooter while this new one will be a walking simulator. The player simply explores a world while a narrative happens. There will be platforming challenges and collectables required to progress the story, but nothing too complicated.

As for the plot, I’ve been kicking around a vague concept of 4D exploration. The last project even had an element of 4D travel as a plot point. Basically, the idea is that some scientists discover how to travel along a new spatial axis and find new worlds existing in the same 3D space as their home world. It’s been hard deciding what kind of game would pair well with this story, but I think I found a match. When I decided to make a walking simulator, I knew the setting had to be beyond weird because it would be the only interesting aspect of the game. The idea of “Spatial Dimension 4” was the perfect setup for an intriguing setting.

Working on this project has improved my skills in Unity as well. I’ve built small 3D landscapes to explore and implemented visual trickery for the obligatory non-euclidean geometry. As for art, I’m keeping it simple as usual with large pixels and few colors. I’ve seen quite a few games use low-detail textures in a 3D environment, and I’ve grown to like the aesthetic. Plus, I usually get creative blocks whenever I try to make art. I’ll be relying on Unity’s lighting for visual quality rather than my artistic skill.

Anyway, I will be putting up a new page in the Library for this project soon. More details on the project will be there as I develop it. So far I just have a master plan for the main plot points and notes on locations, but I hope you enjoy exploring my new ventures!
