Foxtrot Players' Manual

Foxtrot

You play as an adorable fuzzy alien and explore mysterious and treacherous worlds. You can jump! You can brark! Use these skills to face enemies and reach the end of each stage. If you are skilled enough to complete Stage 3, then you will be rewarded with a FREE Power Core!

Controls

The fox controlled by the player

The machine has a direction stick and two buttons on the control panel. The stick can slide left or right to move the fox respectively. Pressing the buttons will allow the fox to use its skills!

The jump button

Jump

The button with the arrow is your jump button. Leaping into the air will be required to overcome the many obstacles of each stage. Also, certain enemies are weak to being pounced!

The brark button

Brark

The :V button will allow the fox to unleash a mighty brark. The brark fills the immediate surrounding air with sound, and the sound energy can have various effects on your foes. Sometimes it cheers up a sad soul giving you a chance to befriend them. Other times it strikes fear into those who expected an easy fight. More times than not it falls on deaf ears. Maybe the foe is too preoccupied to notice, or maybe they are determined to stop you. Chances are you are face-to-face with a creature who thinks they are more cute than you, and are unamused by your brark.

Stage 1: Hometown

The fox's home is on the edge of a city in the foothills. The city is inhabited by bipedal creatures and other fuzzy aliens like the fox. Escape the city and cross the rolling green hills to find a portal to another mysterious world!

Stage 2: Lines Between Forest, Land, and Sea

The road between portals only grows more treacherous. A light at the end of a dark fungal forest leads to an ocean shore covered with hardened enemies immune to all attacks. Just between the forest and the shore lies the next portal, yet it is surrounded by a fortress of aggressive bipedal creatures!

Stage 3: A Remarkable Divide

From atop a mesa, a black beacon calls to you across the desert. Climb down the cliffside and face horrific monsters. What enchanting secrets does the shining black monument keep?

Enemies

Life

You get three hits to make it to the end of each stage. Getting hurt will almost always take one of your hits away. If you lose all your life, you will have to restart at the beginning of the stage and lose all points earned since the last stage.

Crushing Defeat

Giant dinosaurs and the entity known as the Ocean are capable of dealing more damage than your little life can handle. Be careful when trotting under giants and leaping over the abyss.

Be it kicking or flailing, there are creatures out in the universe who will hurt you, almost always unintentionally. These creatures are known as enemies. Your best option is to avoid direct contact to stay alive. However, if the enemy is defeatable, be it befriending, scaring, or pouncing, you will be rewarded with points!

Watch out for these enemies during your journey!

Spike Head

Spike Head

Bipedal creatures with sprouting appendages and golden spikes growing atop their heads. Their eyes point down as they are deeply focused on their mundane lives of walking from point A to point B. They will trod upon you without realizing it if you happen to be in their way. A good brark might capture their attention and brighten up their day!

Bald

Bald

Have the same physique as Spike Heads, but their heads do not grow spikes. They are also grumpy and have places to be. A brark cannot melt their frozen hearts, but their heads are safe to jump on!

Groover

Groover

Same species of Spike Heads, but the Groovers are in the zone with music pumped directly into their brains with a sound device which covers their spikes. They can’t hear a brark over their jams!

Raccoon

Raccoon

Almost as cute as you! They hide in a metal receptacle of ammunition and throw projectiles. Be sure to time your jumps correctly, or you might not make it!

Deer

Deer

Stampeding quadrupeds with sharp horns upon their heads. A well-timed jump can help you avoid these enemies completely.

Porcupine

Porcupine

Living balls of spikes who like to hide in holes of the hills. They are impervious to brarks, but they are easy to avoid due to their small size.

Crab

Crab

Strafe side-to-side and pinch upward. Their exoskeleton protects them from all forms of damage.

Shark

Shark

Made entirely out of teeth. Do NOT pet! The aquatic maw waits patiently for meat to go swimming.

Dino

Dino

Friendly giants who occasionally stroll along the shore. Their thick skin protects them from sharks, and makes them useful as mobile platforms.

Unga Bunga

Unga Bunga

Bipedal beasts with powerful throwing arms. Their club-throwing ability makes it difficult to approach them, but with skilled dodging and a quick brark, you can frighten them away!

Unga Groover

Unga Groover

Someone dropped their music apparatus during the tour, and these ungas are too busy discovering sweet jams to defend the fort.

Unga Smasher

Unga Smasher

They repeatedly smash the ground before them to prevent intruders from passing. They never worry about whatever is behind them, obviously because no one will ever get past. No one would ever jump clear over their clubs and pounce on their heads.

Pentant

Pentant

Horrifying pentapedal monsters which spawn deep within the cliffs. They dig to the surface to terrorize tourists. One of these almost bit me while I was taking the tour. The experience traumatized me and I had no choice but to incorporate them as enemies in my game.

Alien

Star Friend

A traveler from beyond the Starport. 100% friendly, but I will still reward you with points if you share a brark with them. Their aircrafts also serve as platforms to help you cross the cliffs.

I would like to thank 4D Exploration Labs for letting me tour their worlds and inspiring this game. Many of the characters are based on creatures I met during the tour. When I met one of the fox aliens, I asked the scientists if I could keep it as a pet. They told me it would be a very bad idea. So I did the next best thing. I created a computer simulation of the fox finding its way to Onyx. I still visit the city occasionally to see if my dreams ever come true.
